Dear Reader,

Welcome to the first official newsletter of Aptitude, one of the European Large-Scale Pilots co-funded by the European Union to test the European Digital Identity Wallet in real-life conditions. Aptitude kicked off in Paris in October 2025, bringing together 300 representatives from 117 organisations to launch work on four use cases: Digital Travel Credentials, Smart Ticketing & Check-in, the Mobile Vehicle Registration Certificate, and Payments with Strong Customer Authentication.

Six months later, at Aptitude Connect in Berlin, the consortium reviewed its first results and welcomed Estonia as a new member.

Today, that journey is well under way. Public institutions, experts and innovators from across Europe are turning the vision of the European Digital Identity Wallet into real-life scenarios, to simplify daily life, strengthen trust and security and ensure European interoperability.

This first newsletter brings together the highlights of the year and a look at what’s coming next.

Aptitude Marks One Year of Progress at the 2nd Board of Beneficiaries in Milan

Milan, 5–6 October 2026

One year after its launch, 150 participants from more than 100 organisations across 15 countries gathered at Politecnico di Milano for Aptitude’s 2nd Board of Beneficiaries. Workshops, demos and a joint Aptitude × WE BUILD session reviewed the first year and set the course for the next: taking the four use cases to testing and deployment.

Aptitude at GDC26: Advancing Interoperable Digital Identity Across Europe

Geneva, 1–3 September 2026

GDC26, the Global Digital Collaboration Conference, brought together more than 2,000 participants in Geneva to discuss the future of digital identity and trusted digital infrastructure worldwide. Alongside the WE BUILD Consortium, Aptitude shared its Large-Scale Pilot experience. In the PhotoID “carwash” room, visitors experienced a full digital travel journey, from credential issuance to verification by an Aptitude verifier.

Aptitude Contributes to Real-World PhotoID Testing in France

La Ciotat & Marseille, 27–29 May 2026

How do you take a digital travel credential from the test lab to a real airport? After three days of interoperability testing in La Ciotat, volunteers used France Identité to present PhotoID-based Digital Travel Credentials at Marseille Provence Airport, in real airport and border-control settings: a key step from technical standards to everyday travel.

Aptitude Marks Six Months of Progress Toward the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW)

Berlin, 20–21 April 2026

At Aptitude Connect, 43 experts reviewed the first six months across 9 sessions and 5 workshops, including a cross-border, end-to-end journey simulation. The meeting also welcomed Estonia as a new member of the consortium.
